5-HTP, the intermediate metabolite between the amino acid L-tryptophan and serotonin, is extracted from the seed of an African plant (Griffonia simplicifolia). 5-HTP readily crosses the blood-brain barrier and increases central nervous system (CNS) synthesis of serotonin. Serotonin can affect sleep, appetite, temperature, sexual behaviour, and pain sensation. Through its effects on mood and cravings for food via seratonin, 5-HTP can help manage weight. Directions:
Adult Dosage: Take 3 chewable tablets, 3 times daily, 30 minutes prior to a meal. To minimize the risk of gastrointestinal side effects, start dosing at 1 tablet, 2 - 3 times per day and slowly increase to effective dose over a 2 week period.
