The music on this CD reflects the music mix on Classic Drive - ABC Classic FM's 4-7pm weekday program.

Classic Drive mostly travels through classical music territory but the program often crosses the classical frontier into other areas, particularly jazz and world music but sometimes film scores and new age, and just occasionally it ventures into some of the quieter regions of pop. Tune in to Classic Drive on your way home and you could find yourself listening to anything from the Australian Chamber Orchestra performing a Bach concerto, to Toumani Diabate playing kora or mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter singing one of ABBA's old hits.

All the performances here are Australian. That's because one of the regular segments on Drive, 'On the Verandah', showcases Australian artists - there's a different Australian artist featured each week - and since the segment began over five years ago it's featured a fabulous array of established and emerging artists. My being exposed to this fantastic line-up of Australian talent, week in, week out, meant that it just seemed obvious that this Classic Drive CD should be a celebration of the brilliance and diversity of Australian music and musicians.

Music for the Open Road is something of a journey through time and space itself. We set off with a contemporary take on 17th-century England with Slava Grigoryan's Fantasy on a Theme by William Lawes, then visit Bach with Diana Doherty's haunting oboe before heading towards present-day northern Australian waters and the rolling rhythm of Seaman Dan's Old Men and the Sea - via a Shostakovich Prelude and Fugue and Peter Sculthorpe's Darwin Calypso. On our way back to Bach, the route takes in Simon Tedeschi's brilliant rendition of Alligator Crawl, Nicola Watson's whimsical and catchy song Windmills, flamenco with Arrebato, and Genevieve Lacey's virtuoso dash through a Strauss Polka. There are some spots to slow down and take in a little peace and quiet along the way as well, with Mendelssohn's Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage and Michael Atherton's Shall We Dream.

This is music 'to go' - drive away music to take you anywhere.
