BBC Music, in association with IMG Artists, entered into a worldwide agreement to release and market more than 65 great recordings from the BBC classical sound archives; none have ever been officially released by the BBC. These rare recorded jewels are being released on the newly-created label - BBC Legends.

"The most treasured part of the BBC’s classical archive will become an essential part of every music lover’s collection. Nothing transcends the thrill of a truly great live performance and these records capture that excitement. I hope they will provide endless enjoyment for many people." John Willan, Director, BBC Music.
Unheard since their original performances, all recordings in the series took place between 1938 and 1979 and now serve to illustrate the unique artistry of many of the greatest performers of the 20th century.
Each tape has been carefully restored using state of the art 20-bit remastering digital technology, so retaining the character of the sound but affording greater clarity to today’s more discerning listener. The majority of the releases are in stereo sound with only some of the very early recordings appearing in mono.
When asked about his involvement in the project, Stephen Wright, Managing Director, IMG Artists answered: "It has been a lifelong ambition of mine to see some of the great past live performances in the BBC Archives made accessible to the widest possible audience. This project finally makes it feasible. Those performances that so thrilled the audiences of yesteryear can now be heard, in carefully restored sound, by the record buying public of today."
