ABC Classics is proud to present an electrifying new recording of J.S. Bach’s sublime St John Passion, performed by the superstars of the period-instrument world: the Academy of Ancient Music (AAM). The Academy’s musicians are virtuoso performers on instruments either from Bach’s own time, or precisely modelled on them, recapturing the intimacy, passion and vitality of the music when it was first composed. Their performances are vibrant and full of energy; the superb artistry and musical imagination of the players combines with a deep understanding of the music as it was originally performed. Ravishingly beautiful, profoundly moving and intensely dramatic, Bach's St John Passion is an undisputed masterpiece, bringing to life with expressive immediacy and deep devotion the story of Christ's arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane, his trial, torture and crucifixion. In a bold stroke that scandalised some of his own congregation, Bach combined the reverent solemnity of the church with the passionate emotions of the opera theatre, sweeping his listeners up into the heart of the drama. Bach returned to this music again and again, reworking it to suit the singers and the players he had to hand. This rare recording presents Bach’s original score of 1724: the St John Passion as the composer first conceived it. Through this version, we see a younger Bach: a composer with, in the words of AAM director Richard Egarr, a ‘more muscular’ musical vision. For this landmark recording, the Academy of Ancient Music is joined by a stellar array of soloists, led by internationally acclaimed lyric tenor James Gilchrist as the Evangelist. Matthew Rose and Ashley Riches are compelling as Jesus and Pontius Pilate; Elizabeth Watts, Sarah Connolly, Andrew Kennedy and Christopher Purves are radiant in the solo arias, and the Choir of the AAM sing with an exquisite blend of power and delicacy.
