The latest offering in ABC Classics' popular Opera series is Dido's Lament, a showcase of some of opera's most tragic, romantic and heartwrenching moments.

Tears, sighs and sorrow, the power of love, the ache of longing and the bliss of precious memories: this sublime double-CD is an ecstatic journey through a rich emotional landscape towards healing and peace.

There is grief and sadness, but also dignity and acceptance; there is passion and anger, betrayal and loneliness, but even in the depths of anguish, there is a beauty in this music that transforms suffering into ecstasy.

This exquisite collection is also a journey through time, starting with Monteverdi's Lamento d'Arianna - the first truly great opera lament, and the model for all who came after. Ariadne, abandoned by her beloved Theseus on the island of Naxos, cries out in agony as she watches the sails of his ship disappear on the horizon. The rest of the opera has been lost, but this lament was too popular to be forgotten.

Gluck and Mozart are more restrained but no less poignant: Orpheus confronting a future without his beloved Eurydice, Pamina in The Magic Flute struggling to understand why Tamino has suddenly turned his back on her, the Countess in The Marriage of Figaro wishing she could forget the sweet moments of a marriage that has turned sour. Beethoven's hero Florestan, staring into the empty darkness of his prison cell, is comforted by a vision of his wife, like an angel leading him to freedom, but heaven is silent as Tosca asks why her life of good deeds is being rewarded with evil and cruelty, while Wagner's Isolde embraces death with delight, longing to be reunited with her Tristan. But the most famous of all is surely Dido's Lament: its simple, timeless beauty speaks straight to the heart.

With performances by Renee Fleming, Katia Ricciarelli, Renata Tebaldi, Anne Sofie von Otter, Sara Macliver, Yvonne Kenny, Emma Matthews, Joan Carden, Elizabeth Connell, Marilyn Richardson, Andreas Scholl, Sally-Anne Russell, Jonathan Summers, Teddy Tahu Rhodes and more, this is an album to be treasured.
