When Handel's Messiah was first heard in Dublin on 13 April 1742, there were seven soloists, and the one thing which hasn't changed since that first performance is the popularity of the work. Some 700 people attended the premiere: ticket sales had been so successful that the organisers had had to ask the ladies to come without their hooped skirts, and the gentlemen without their swords. People have flocked to hear Messiah ever since. ABC Classics' Messiah: The Dream Cast features stellar performers such as Joan Sutherland, Teddy Tahu-Rhodes, Yvonne Kenny and Sara Macliver, making it the most sought-after Messiah, this Christmas.

The extraordinary breadth of styles and interpretations on this album is a testimony to the continuing power of Messiah to move and inspire us. Handel's music is a living, breathing thing, and every time we meet it, there are new riches to be discovered.
