The Sydney Opera House Grand Organ is in many ways a unique instrument.
With 10,500 pipes, of which 2700 can be sounded simultaneously, it is both the largest instrument in the country, and the largest mechanical action organ in the world.
The organ took 10 years to complete and was build by Ronald Sharp. Sydney organ builder Ronald Sharp (b. 1929) specialises in mechanical, tracker action instruments, and he led the way in reintroducing mechanical action to Australia. Beauty of tone is his preoccupation. His first organ was at St Mary's Cathedral. Others include Knox Grammar chool, Ormond College Organ (which has since been altered), Perth Concert Hall and Wollongong Town Hall.
The inaugural concert series for the Opera House organ was held in 1979 and following this, highlights from the series were released in 1981 on LP by Move Records. In time for the 30th nniversary of the opening of this important instrument, Move Records has re-released this LP on CD featuring extra material from the tapes of the opening concerts. The disc includes a full colour booklet with program notes, full specification of the organ, as well as historical information on the construction of the organ.
