'America's Queen of Opera' proclaimed the front-page of Time when it honoured Beverly Sills with a cover story a number of years ago. No description more aptly describes her stature as a uniquely vital force in our music life.

From her triumphant opening night in September 1966 in Julius Caesar at the New York City Opera she was catapulted to La Scala, Vienna, Covent Garden, The Metropolitan Opera and beyond.

She began exploring the bel canto repertory in depth and expanded the number of her roles to more than 70, including the Donizetti trilogy of operas about British monarchs - Roberto Devereux, Maria Stuarda, and Anna Bolena.

By the time of her retirement, her roles spanned the gamut from Rameau's Hippolite et Aricie to Luigi Nono's 12-tone Intolleranza

'Mine was the American dream for the opera singer,' said the redheaded dynamo.
