A revelatory Schumann recital by one of the greatest Lieder singers in the German tradition.

The 2-CD set offers Schumann's most popular song cycles to poems by Eichendorff and Heine and many other songs, which mostly appear on CD for the first time here.

Fischer-Dieskau's readings have acquired a sharper edge, with the darkness and irony in some of these songs more specifically contrasted against the poetry and expressive warmth. Eschenbach's accompaniment is superb, consistently imaginative and the recording is excellent.
