Antonio Vivaldi was one of the most prolific composers of his time. In addition to dozens of operas, secular cantatas, oratorios, motets and other sacred works and a smattering of chamber pieces, Vivaldi produced over five hundred concertos of which around half were for violin. Many of these were widely disseminated across Europe and in particular his published sets L'estro armonico and Il cimento dell'armonia e dell'invenzione (which includes The Four Seasons) not only made him famous but revolutionised the way concertos were written for a whole generation of composers. Where previously the Roman concerto grosso model with an ensemble of three soloists working together as a unit had been dominant, now the Venetian fashion for solo concertos with one or sometimes two independent soloists took over. In this type of concerto the soloist(s) typically alternate with the main body of the orchestra, playing brilliant episodes of new material in between returns of the main theme played by the full orchestra.
