As one of the 20th century's most acclaimed Bach interpreters, Karl Richter devotes his expertise to this monumental epic of Christ's final hours. With his Munchener Bach Orchester and the Munchner Bach Chor, ensembles he formed and with whom he achieved world renown, Karl Richter taps the power of Bach's rich choral writing for a rendering of startling immediacy. This St. John Passion was performed in the stunning monastery church Diessen, at the Ammersee, and produced by Arne Arnbom in 1971. It features a superlative cast led by Peter Schreier as Evangelist, Ernst Gerold Schramm as Jesus and with Helen Donath singing the soprano arias.
