An historic account of Wunderlich's Almaviva in a first-time release on any format!
This film of Rossini's
Il Barbiere di Siviglia
, sung in German, was taped in black and white for a TV broadcast at the Residenztheater Munich in 1959. It is released by DG in the company's series of issues that celebrate the great German tenor, Fritz Wunderlich.
The footage reveals the comic talent of Wunderlich as Almaviva, in a performance of wit and vocal elan. This performance is not just a one-man show; Wunderlich is joined by two of the greatest baritones of the 20th century in Hermann Prey as Figaro and Hans Hotter as Basilio. The delightful Erika Koth stars as opera's greatest minx, Rosina. The film is directed by Joseph Keilberth and is of great historic interest.
