The Metropolitan Opera Gala, given on April 27, 1996 to celebrate James Levine's 25th anniversary at the MET, proves to be a real winner. This DVD features an awesome roster of international stars singing some of the best selections from opera, and of course James Levine, the man who is celebrated by all of them.

It goes without saying that Levine's conducting is incomparable throughout the entire recording. He is truly one of the world's best conductors, and has formed the MET Orchestra into one of the best in the world. This celebration perfectly captures the incredibly broad repertoire for which he is famous.
The gala celebration immediately catches the attention with spectacular performances by striking stars such as Bryn Terfel, Roberto Alagna, Renee Fleming, James Morris, Ileana Cotrubas, Placido Domingo, Anne Sofie von Otter and many others. With plenty of items on the program, the event catered for the broadest repertoire, including stunning arias from Bizet's The Pearl Fishers, Strauss' Rosenkavalier, Verdi's Don Carlo and a stirring performance of the final scene from Wagner's Meistersinger.
