Franz Lehar's Land des Lachelns showcases the best of German operetta.

While most works from the heyday of German operetta have long disappeared from the stage, Franz Lehar's Das Land des Lachelns (The Land of Smiles) is an exception that is well-known to today's music-loving public.

With joyful music, a witty script about love in the face of cultural boundaries, and famous melodies like 'Dein ist mein ganzes Herz' ('You are my heart's delight') and 'Immer nur lacheln' ('Keep smiling'), this operetta has been a winning success since it was written in 1929. Legendary German tenor Rene Kollo (Prince Sou-Chong) and Birgit Pitsch-Sarata (Lisa) act in colorful settings and costumes that bring out the charm of the work.

Directed by Arthur Maria Rabenalt, this is a brilliant opera movie from the Unitel archives. This is its first international release.
