The Akathistos Hymn, an intensely beautiful set of melismatic chants sung in praise of the Virgin Mary, is one of the high points of Byzantine art. The hymns' various texts are multi-layered in meaning and rich with cascades of rapturous imagery. This recording is the performers' homage to this sacred and potent text, as well as a critical and questioning engagement with it.
