A Dream of the Middle Ages Set to Music.

Gareth Koch writes: "Why have the myths and legends of the Middle Ages fascinated people for so long? Why should stories from a credulous age, an age coloured by superstition and belief in the most unlikely and bizarre things, still compel our imagination?

"Medieval myths were probably never believed in with a slavish literalness, but reflected a sensitivity to a greater reality, other than that offered by the five senses. Humankind is always drawn to the unseen, continually seeking to find new dimensions of the extraordinary and the astounding. In setting some of these myths and legends to music, I have sought to reanimate and transport particular stories into the realm of music, leaving the interpretation of symbolism and imagery to the fantasy and discretion of the listener. The legends thus exist on another level on this album: a level less concrete and more fanciful than the written word. The listener can reinvent or recall the myths at liberty, and, through the medium of music, enter a dreamscape or otherworld."
