Gareth Koch writes: "In 711 the Moors invaded Andalusia, and dominated the province until 1492. To this day, the influence of Islam is present in the architecture and music of the region. As early as the 4th century B. C., however, Roman chroniclers praised the exceptional talent of the female dancers and singers of Baetica (lower Andalusia). From then on, the history of the region was punctuated by a succession of invasions and waves of immigration by Romans, Jews, Vandals, Celts, Arabs, Berbers and Gypsies. During Islamic rule in Andalusia, the Gypsies migrated from India to Spain, where as outcasts they were driven into the hills and caves of Andalusia. In exile, they created a unique music that retained strong Eastern and Moorish characteristics. To make matters even more interesting, the existent Andalusian folk music was added to the mixture.

"It is difficult to say how this original Andalusian folk music sounded, although several musical languages no doubt co-existed, each one with its characteristic instruments, as is the case today in Morocco. The eventual fusion of Islamic, Gypsy and Andalusian musical elements produced the phenomenon known today as flamenco – an oral tradition that has exerted a powerful artistic influence on many composers. It is this heady mixture of Gypsy song with Andalusian folk music that so permeates the work of Albeniz, Nin, Granados, Falla and others. They are by no means 'flamenco composers' but have, to a greater or lesser extent, been nourished by the spring."
