This classic recording of one of the greatest of French operas is restored to the catalogue after not being available for several years. It features two of the greatest singers in modern times in Jose Carreras and Agnes Baltsa. Colin Davis has always possessed a very strong affinity with French opera and is here at his best.

"Davis's speeds sound natural and inevitable ones and he doesn't indulge them … his ideas are executed with care, skill and dedication … the chorus combines refinement with vigour … the orchestra … reveals all the beauty and subtlety of the composer's well-judged scoring … Carreras enters into all the ecstasy and agony of Samson's dealings with his own followers and with the enemy … Baltsa is alluring or pointed in her phrasing … and brings to each of her solos a personal magnetism in terms of tone, resinous and keenly focused … I greatly enjoyed hearing the piece again." - Gramophone January 1991.
