The analogy between string quartets and a marriage is well-worn but still carries a grain of truth. They are best (both of them) when they are stable. They gain maturity from longevity and the very best of them allow for what the poet Rainer Maria Rilke describes as the 'infinite distances' between the closest human beings. Even a secure relationship can suffer disruptions. One hopes a calamity keeps it from dissolving and, in fortunate circumstances, makes the partnership stronger. In the end, looking back over decades of life together, there is the hope that something lasting was accomplished, some legacy left behind.
All of the above is true for the Takacs Quartet, about to celebrate its thirtieth anniversary season. In its three decades there have been only two personnel changes. The present quartet is that amazing amalgam of four strong individuals who create a 'fifth' great artist, the Takacs Quartet, when they come together. They have weathered near dissolution and death. Best of all, they have created a legacy of superb recordings for Decca, their exclusive recording company since 1988. This set of compact discs is like a family photo album, a gathering of happy memories with room for more pictures yet to come.
Much of the repertoire on this set is otherwise unavailable. Being a conspectus of the Quartet's career, it features both the 'old' and 'new' Takacs. Guest artists include pianist Andreas Haefliger in a superbly eloquent performance of the Dvorak Piano Quintet and cellist Miklos Perenyi in the great C major String Quintet of Schubert.
The set is all stylishly packaged and includes extensive liner notes on the music and the players by Evans Mirageas, a former Vice President of Artists and Repertoire at Decca.
"... this is not just a run-of-the-mill compilation album but a wonderful celebratory collection, both in terms of the elevated standard of the musical content and the superb interpretations. Super sound quality as we have come to expect from Decca and the annotation is pretty good too. A top class release worthy of considerable praise. It would enhance any collection."
