A Deutsche Grammophon Collector's Edition budget priced set of 7 CDs.

Specially recorded for Deutsche Grammophon's monumental Beethoven Edition in 1997, this seven-CD set of the complete Beethoven folksong arrangements was undoubtedly one of the edition's highlights and one of the volumes to gain most praise. Now it is made available at budget price for the first time.

It was a mammoth undertaking: the bulk of the 168 songs were recorded in just four sessions between July 1996 and March 1997 at Abbey Road studios and Henry Wood Hall in London. It may have been a marathon, but what is most striking about the set is its freshness and the sense of both commitment and enjoyment from all involved. Pianist Malcolm Martineau – today regarded as one of the leading accompanists around – masterminded the whole project, with a team of singers that included the experienced Dame Felicity Lott, Ann Murray, Sarah Walker and Thomas Allen as well as younger voices like Catrin Wyn Davies, John Mark Ainsley and Christopher Maltman, backed up by an outstanding group of chamber players (Blankestijn, Layton, Osostowicz, Ursula Smith). And the music? Long underrated, it reveals a Beethoven evidentally revelling in the folk idiom (he was originally sent the melodies and a general desciription of the poems' contents by the Edinburgh publisher who commissioned the works) and continually finding new accompaniments to enliven his settings.

The CD booklet includes a slightly abridged version of the original Beethoven Edition essay plus a full index of all the songs for easy reference and a delightful double-page spread of all the original participants.
