Legion are the conductors who are regarded as pioneers of the early music movement. But one who undoubtedly deserves this accolade is Fritz Lehmann (1904–1956), who took over the Gottingen Handel Festival in 1934 and who was one of the first conductors to stage Baroque operas uncut, drawing on period performance practice. As a Bach conductor, too, Lehmann – who died in 1956 while conducting a performance of the St Matthew Passion – deserves our lasting gratitude. He first conducted the Berlin Philharmonic only a few years before his death, a collaboration documented by the present recording, in which the orchestra's bewitching sonorities are characteristically combined with Lehmann's acute feeling for translucent textures and articulatory detail.
