Here is the MET's production of Verdi's most concentrated, sweeping and inexorably tragic opera,
Otello
, new in October 1995, with Placido Domingo in one of his greatest roles opposite the stunning young Desdemona of Renee Fleming in her first breakaway Met success, James Morris singing the evil Iago and Levine conducting, for the first time available on DVD.
Following the MET's previous Zeffirelli staging, the team of Elijah Moshinsky and designer Michael Yeargan created a completely new and successful staging of
Otello
in 1995, centered around the tenor's all-conquering Moor. Their set designs with echoes of Veronese and Tintoretto take their cue from all these emotional moods: the smoky confusion of the opening, the bright blue sky of the second act, and the vast canvas that looms over Otello's furious dialogue with his wife in the third.
When this performance was telecast in 1995, Placido Domingo already had 20 years' experience in the role. With more than 200 performances under his belt, he has a host of insights into the part, both dramatically and vocally, that allowed him bring out his true voice in all its shades.
The other roles have been less firmly in the grasp of given artists, and in New York Domingo has played opposite such Desdemonas as Margaret Price, Kiri Te Kanawa, Aprile Millo and Katia Ricciarelli. Renee Fleming was new to this most lyrical of Verdi soprano roles, and won praise as much for her characterisation –
Opera News
found hers 'an unusually full portrayal' – as for her poised and musical performance.
Presiding over the whole event and urging the music on to its tragic conclusion is the Met's artistic director James Levine, as much as Domingo, the name most associated with Verdi's opera in the last quarter-century of the theatre's history. In a performance of high energy, he demonstrates the 'sense of pace, accent and orchestral colour' noted by the
Washington Post
.
