These performances are now legendary in the concert-going history of Australia. The office of the Sydney International Piano Competition was inundated with requests for the release of these performances, and now twelve years later, the wishes of many are a reality.
Each performance also carries its own story. Vitaly Samoshko, the youngest entrant in the competition that year was 'disqualified' at the Mozart Concerto stage of the Competition for having played from the score (a safety device, as he learned, to his horror, just days before the competition, that he had prepared the incorrect Mozart concerto). He was allowed to go on and play his final piece and what a performance it is - free of any 'competitiveness', full of colour, joy and abandon. Duncan Gifford received the highest placing of any Australian, to date, in the 1992 Competition. He was the darling of the audiences and gave a searing performance of Liszt's Piano Concerto No. 1.
Olivier Cazal had more competitive edge to his playing than just about any entrant in the history of this competition. He seemed determined to win - but didn't. The audience gave him their vote, however (the People's Choice prize) and his high-octane performance of the Prokofiev had audiences barely balanced on the edge of their seats.
