A 5-CD box set in
The Deutsche Grammophon Leonard Bernstein Edition
series.
'Nothing in Leonard Bernstein's previous achievements quite indicated that he might produce the astonishing brilliance found in this new set of the Beethoven symphonies ... in the realism of its engineering, in the poised execution of the Vienna Philharmonic, and in the controlled, tasteful vigour of Bernstein's conducting, [it] sets standards of Beethoven playing that recall Toscanini's heyday with the New York Philharmonic'
- Mortimer H. Frank, Fanfare.
'Whatever Bernstein does, he really means it, and his ability to communicate his intense feelings about the music to the orchestra, and thus to the audience, is quite remarkable. It is manifest not only in the energetic sweep of each performance, but also in a hundred tiny felicities'
- Gramophone, 3/1989.
'They [the Vienna Philharmonic] are so proud to have this great tradition, they are so loving of what they do and of who they are. This is something I catch like a disease - it's so contagious for me because I operate in terms of love.'
- Leonard Bernstein.
'refreshingly spontaneous'
- The Guardian, London.
Previously on 6 CDs, Bernstein's Beethoven cycle now appears as a budget 5CD box set. These are live recordings edited from live concerts using DG's sophisticated techniques - the quality a tribute to Bernstein's outstanding longtime producer, Hans Weber.
Bernstein on the Eroica:
'If we can take away with us even the tiniest idea of what is operating in this music that makes it so superior to other music of this epoch, then we shall be taking away a great deal.'
Bernstein's Fifth: a newly thought-out interpretation - previously, according to Bernstein, 'too sung and Brahmsian', now 'really agitated and staccato' (first movement).
Bernstein's Ninth (which he first performed on 1 September 1952):
'Beethoven, like the greatest of prophets and teachers, knew how to pluck from the air the essential, the elementally true, and develop from it a complex superstructure that embraces all human experience.'
The highly readable booklet notes are by American critic Jed Distler. A second Beethoven box is planned for 2005, completing the DG recordings.
