The Beethoven recording project that commenced in 1997 has seen some of the greatest music ever written for the piano given a unique, Australian voice. The collaboration between an Australian pianist playing an instrument (the Stuart piano

) designed and manufactured in Australia, and Australian musicians conducted by a talented Australian has breathed new life into these famous works. As he did with the sonatas, Gerard Willems has shown his absolute authority and command of all the technical and musical challenges of Beethoven's scores. His Napoleonic interpretation of the first movement of the 'Emperor' announces a climax befitting these five concertos, just as his powerful recording of the composer's last sonata, Opus 111, crowned the sonata recordings. In the years between 1997 and 2003, Gerard Willems has completed an odyssey of extraordinary breadth, placing on the public record his deep affinity with the 32 piano sonatas and the five piano concertos of arguably the greatest composer. In all, 12 CDs, together with a DVD of the 'Emperor' Concerto. A phenomenal achievement by a great Australian artist.
