Basset Clarinet: An extended clarinet developed in the late 1780s by the virtuoso Anton Stadler and the Vienna court instrument maker Theodor Lotz, with an extra four low notes (E-flat, D, C-sharp, C) below the normal range of the clarinet. The exact construction of this instrument could only be guessed from vague contemporary descriptions until the discovery in Latvia in the early 1990s of a single engraving of the instrument Stadler used on his European tour from 1791 to 1795. This has made it possible to reconstruct the instrument for which Mozart wrote and to hear his music, as far as we can ascertain, just as he heard it.
