When Isaac Stern visited China in June 1979, he was among the first Western musicians granted access to the country as it emerged from the Cultural Revolution, it was then he first met a young, talented cellist, Jian Wang.

Twenty years after meeting Wang in China, Isaac Stern described him as "one of the finest young instrumentalists of our time."

Jian's international career began in 1982 when, with a small group of fellow students from the Shanghai Conservatory, he first travelled to the USA. Later, with the support and encouragement of both Stern and Sau-Wing Lam, a Chinese music enthusiast and philanthropist, he was able to return to the USA to continue his studies, first at the Yale School of Music and then at the Juilliard School.
