He is the most famous flamenco guitar player alive.
He learnt to play his instrument as a child learns to speak – by listening. He does not know any notes, but he has the melodies in his blood and the technique in his fingers. Music came to him in a very natural way: he acquired it just like a language, enriching and completing it constantly until it became his very own way to express himself.
Before him, Flamenco stars were singers or dancers. But it was he who completed Flamenco by adding a third dimension to it, the instrumental one. By doing so, he turned Flamenco guitar playing into an art in itself.
At the age of 8, Francisco Sanchez first appeared on stage accompanying his brother as a Flamenco singer. After that, he rapidly became a star of the solo guitar. At the age of 15, he adopted his mother's name, Lucia, and started his international career as Paco de Lucia.
The documentary by Daniel Hernandez produced by ALEA TV counts with the exclusive participation of Paco de Lucia, who is currently living in Mexico. For the first - and, as he says, for the last - time, he opened the door of his house, this very private and intimate place, to a shooting team. So he gave us the possibility to see him fishing, cooking, on the market and with his friends.
Francisco Sanchez - the private man, and Paco de Lucia - the star, are two persons in one. The artist's life is a constant fluctuation between these two persons. The documentary is structured around these two lives of one person. On the one hand, it presents a very intimate vision of this myth of the Flamenco guitar, with the testimonies of his family and old friends, some of them also important musicians like Chick Corea. On the other hand, the documentary constitutes an important music film featuring his last European Tour, several concerts, and interviews with other guitar players that were fascinated by him and on whom he had a strong influence, like Vicente Amigo, Tomatito or Juan Manuel Canizares. It also includes very complete archives, for example those in which Paco de Lucia plays with Camaron de la Isla, Al Di Meola or John McLaughlin.
Paco de Lucia is an exclusive and an intimate portrait of one of the world's major geniuses of the guitar.
