To celebrate the return to Australia of a great Australian painting, the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra is proud to release this unusual CD.

The National Gallery of Australia and the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery recently paid the astounding sum of $1.5 million for the painting Mount Wellington and Hobart Town from Kangaroo Point by John Glover. It was painted in Hobart, of course, but has been in England since 1835. It was thought missing, perhaps destroyed, until it was recently discovered in England.

The picture is the only eyewitness visual account of the last days of freedom of the Big River and Oyster Bay Aboriginal tribes before they were shipped to Flinders Island. The painting captures the moment when the Aborigines were still free. They were not prisoners in Hobart, and had no idea what was to befall them. John Glover (1767-1849) was born in England but settled in Australia. He was one of the first truly great Australian artists.

This CD contains music that was written and performed during his lifetime. From their vast repertoire and discography, the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra has put together a CD of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven for this celebration. This CD also includes a previously unavailable overture by Rossini to his opera The Lady of the Lake.
