Schoenberg was one of the revolutionary figures in the development of twentieth-century music. His Verklarte Nacht was originally written as a string sextet in 1899 and marks the beginning of Schoenberg's important works - it clearly shows the musical influences on Schoenberg up to that time: Brahms and Wagner.

Schoenberg's musical style quickly developed and another key work, dating from 1906, is the First Chamber Symphony, a work which is scored for very economical forces employing 15 players. It plays continuously but clearly falls into four sections or movements typical of the standard symphony.

At the opposite end of the scale to the First Chamber Symphony is the huge choral work to poems by JP Jacobsen, Gurrelieder (1911). The work demands massive orchestral forces, chorus and soloists. It includes a part for a speaker and here that role is fulfilled by the great Wagnerian bass-baritone, Hans Hotter. This is a role which Hotter, for many years since his retirement from singing, has continued to perform into his early 90s.
