Featured players in this engaging CD are Michael Hooper (mandolin), Esther Cheng (violin), Michael Tabrett (viola) and Catherine Tabrett (cello). This group premieres new works by Gross & Allworth. Adding to Gross' already substantial contribution to mandolin repertoire is Concerto da Camera (1997) in 4 movements. Reflecting, in its structure, the musical traditions of Vienna and, in particular, the work of 18th century Czech composer Dusek. Gross achieves a pleasing fusion of past and present. A work of distinctive modernity.

Also pleasing, and written for the same ensemble, are 3 new works by Allworth: Music For All Seasons is autumnal in character, giving clear themes in 12-note formations and sequential forms. In Meditations prominence is given to the mandolin, while in Forever Sunset, inspired by Tennyson's poem "The Lotus Eaters", the ensemble creates colouristic effects.

Carr-Boyd's Suite Veronique for solo harpsichord (1982) places modern dance and folk rhythms in the structure of a baroque suite. The CD closes with a historic recording by the Choir of Christ Church St. Lawrence in Sydney, 1979, of Nunc Dimittis, conducted by Colin Sapsford.
