Carmina Burana is renowned for its menacing yet thrilling opening chorus - it then continues on a journey through a wild and barbaric world of changing fortunes and fate, love and lust, death, temptation and submission.

Carl Orff found the texts in 1934 in the monastery of Benediktbeuern. They are a diverse collection of poems from the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. The poets were often wandering students or clerics identified only by pseudonyms, but they also included reasonably distinguished poets such as Hugo of Orleans.

"You open that package of new releases, out tumbles yet another Carmina Burana and downwards plunge the spirits. But it's from the Australian choral group Cantillation (with help from the Sydney Children's Choir) and you feel an obligation to the locals, so into the player it goes. And surprise, surprise - it's hugely invigorating. Cantillation's version, under the baton of Antony Walker, uses the pared-back forces of voices, two pianos and percussion (don't worry, the scoring is Carl Orff's) to stimulating effect. The fog of heavy orchestration is banished, leaving a strong, cleanly articulated, vigorously sprung performance. Of course, with the percussion coming from Synergy and the pianos in the exciting four hands of Australian Virtuosi (Michael Kieran Harvey and Bernadette Havey-Balkus), it's hard to go wrong. As a bonus, the punchy soloists are Jonathon Summers, Sara Macliver and Paul McMahon". - Deborah Jones, The Weekend Australian.
