Mercedes Sosa was born and raised in Tucaman, Argentina, beginning her performing career at age 15.

Her repertoire of overtly political material made her the driving force behind the nueva cancion movement and resulted in her being dubbed "the voice of the silent majority".

She was arrested in mid-concert in 1975, along with many members of the audience, and was later forced to leave Argentina due to death threats, returning in 1982.

In 2000 she won a Grammy for Best Folk Album for this title at the Latin Grammy Awards.
