Eclairs sur l'Au-Dela… was commissioned by the New York Philharmonic for the orchestra's 150th anniversary and is a meditation on the Boyond and the heavenly Jerusalem… Intentionally or not, the composition sums up the work of one of the greatest and most influential musicians of the [twentieth] century. Many of Messiaen's familiar technical features are present - stylised birdsong melodies based on 'modes of limited transposition', chordal-colours, the influence of plainchant, and rhythms based on Indian talas. Once again, the Messiaenic architecture creates the illusion of vast tracts of space and time. - from the booklet notes by Gordon Williams.
