Born in Czechoslovakia in 1921, Jiri Tancibudek's story is the stuff of which legends are made. He was the Principal Oboist for the Czech Opera before becoming Principal Oboe in the Czech Philharmonic under Rafael Kubelik, a position he held for five years before being forced to escape his country, which was embroiled in World War II. A desperate night-time trek across the mountains with his wife and her family followed, and they settled in Australia in 1950.

There followed an extraordinary career. Jiri Tancibudek has been an oboe teacher at many of the leading classical music institutions in Australia as well as Principal Oboist of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and the internationally acclaimed Adelaide Wind Quintet. As a soloist he has performed with some of the most distinguished artists and conductors in the world including Walter Susskind, Josef Krips, Sir Eugene Goossens, Sir John Barbirolli and Yehudi Menuhin. Many composers have written and dedicated works to him including Martinu and Feld as well as Australian composers Margaret Sutherland, Dorian le Gallienne, Miriam Hyde and Franz Holford.
