With a voice of cream and honey - not unlike Renee Fleming (an artist whom Elkins admires) - Margreta Elkins is one of the foremost mezzo-sopranos of our time.

In fact, her voice had an incredible range: she began as a mezzo-soprano, then went up to the high stratospheres of a true soprano range (as witnessed in the aria 'Light as thistledown' in Rosina) and then back to mezzo.

Her recording plaudits include recording Lucia di Lammermoor with Maria Callas (and singing it alongside Sutherland in 1959 at the historical Covent Garden opening night), Wagner's Walkure and Jon Vickers and Erich Leinsdorf and a host of recordings with Joan Sutherland and Richard Bonynge.

An Australian Heritage series title on the ABC Classics label.
