After becoming the first Australian chamber group to win an international chamber music competition in 1999 (Italy’s prestigious Premio Trio di Trieste), Melbourne’s DUO Tsunoda Almonte have been in much demand around the globe. In 2000 the DUO give performances in France, England, Italy, Spain, Argentina, Uruguay and Canada, as well as their home town.

They also made their debut on CD in June on this disc, the musical choices for which reflect their own Japanese and Czech heritages and also their love of French music in a unique cultural collaboration.

Three of the works are passionate expressions of the composers’ conviction of love - for Messiaen and Fauré for a women and for Janácek, a love of his country. The Adagio from Janácek’s Sonata for Violin and Piano later found fame through its poignant use in the film The Unbearable Lightness of Being.

The remaining works are by French influenced Japanese composer Takemitsu (From far beyond Chrysanthemums and November Fog) and Ravel. Ravel’s Pavane for a dead princess is one of his most-loved works and is given a beautifully melancholic reading on this disc.

Miki was born in the US, lived in Japan until the age of 12 when she moved to Australia. Caroline was born in Melbourne to Czech and Italian parents. Making music around the world is nothing new to either musican, both completing studies in Australia and in highly regarded music schools. Caroline studied at the Juilliard School in New York and Miki studied at the Lizst Academy in Budapest.
