Diana Doherty - Principal Oboe of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra - delivers a fascinating collection of twentieth century works for oboe and piano on Blues for D.D.This is a truly superb disc from one of Australia's leading musicians, widely considered one of the world's finest oboists. Well known for her incomparable virtuoso solo performances and spirited interpretations of nineteenth and twentieth century repertoire, this CD includes more than a few surprises: the mysterious and exotic melodies of Antal Dorati and Andre Jolivet, the rhythmic energy and immediate appeal of much-loved Australian composer Ross Edwards' Ulpirra and its soulful, yearning partner Yanada. The superb title track, Blues for D. D. which owes as much to jazz and blues as it does the classical tradition, was written specially for her by composer Jeffrey Agrell and is presented here in two versions - proof that in Diana's hands the oboe is a living and alluring instrument. Diana is joined on Blues for D.D. by New York-based pianist David Korevaar.
