"This instrument, the largest and most famous of the many great civil or municipal organs which came to adorn practically every Town Hall of significance in the Victorian era, was supplied by the London firm of William Hill & Son. Their magnum opus, it was the largest organ in the world - five manuals and pedals, 126 stops and the world's first 64-ft reed stop, a Contra Trombone, which remains unique to this day. It can still lay claim to being the biggest and best preserved nineteenth-century Romantic (as opposed to the later 'Symphonic') organ with its classic principal choruses, splendid ensemble reeds and exquisite flutes and strings." - From the sleeve notes of Ralph Lane.
