The premiere of Larry Sitsky's Concerto for Piano and Orchestra took place on 13 October 1994, in the Eugene Goossens Hall of the ABC Ultimo Centre, Sydney, as part of the Fifth Sydney Spring International Festival of New Music. Roger Woodward was the soloist with the Hunter Orchestra conducted by Roland Peelman. The following year, ABC Radio chose to submit their recording of that performance to the International Rostrum of Composers, an annual forum for world broadcasting organisations convened at UNESCO in Paris under the auspices of the International Music Council. Consequently, Sitsky's Concerto was chosen, by vote of the delegates, as one of ten 'recommended' works for the 1995 session and, subsequently, was broadcast on some twenty-four radio networks worldwide. The preparation for the premiere performance of this concerto was marked by a very active and positive collaboration between the composer and the soloist, exploring pianistic alternatives and, to a certain extent, toying with the structure of the work. The process of creative interplay continued up to the point of this recording.
