Paul Grabowsky does not do things by halves. His 1994 assemblage of leading musicians from around the country into the Australian Art Orchestra was the achievement of a driven man. He saw a gap between composition-based orchestras and improvising jazz ensembles in Australia, and emphatically plugged it. The AAO has given composers who appreciate the vitality of improvisation a chance to write for an orchestra which contains many of the finest 'spontaneous composers' in the country.

Bach, a noted improviser in an age before European concert music was almost entirely confined to paper, would probably have approved of Grabowsky's latest initiative: creating a work for improvisers inspired by his St Matthew Passion.
